Discovery Astrophotography with ZWO ASTRO

117 hours. 3 countries. 4 telescopes. One breathtaking image of M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy.

This stunning collaborative project comes from astrophotographers Alex Linde and Thomas Hansson, who joined forces across borders to photograph the Whirlpool Galaxy from Sweden, Poland, and Texas, USA.

Thomas traveled across Sweden with his SW Esprit 100ED + ASI533MC Pro, capturing both broadband and dual-band data — including from his own suburban backyard. Meanwhile, Alex captured additional data from two locations: using his Celestron EdgeHD 8” + ASI294MM Pro from his garden in Poland, and a remotely controlled Takahashi FSQ85 + ASI2600MM Pro at StarFront Observatory in Texas.

Together, they collected 117 hours of data — 65 hours in H-alpha and 52 hours in LRGB. “The material was very difficult to process because we used different focal lengths,” Alex explains. “It really took me about 10 hours to get the picture you see.”

Despite the complexity, the result speaks for itself — a tribute to patience, precision, and collaboration.

“We’re so glad ZWO appreciated our project. It’s inspired us to think even bigger for future ideas.”

👏 When great minds come together, amazing things happen.
