Discovery Astrophotography with ZWO ASTRO

Chasing the Universe from Zapopan, Mexico – The Astrophotography Journey of Lalo Juárez

What began as a pandemic-era hobby with a simple telescope has evolved into a two-and-a-half-year journey of capturing galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters.

From Curiosity to Cosmos

Lalo Juárez, a passionate astrophotographer from Zapopan, Mexico, has transformed his childhood fascination with the stars into awe-inspiring celestial portraits. “Since I was a child, I always looked the stars and how far away they were, I always felt the need to know what was beyond.” he shares.

From First Shot to Recognized Results

His first astrophotography attempt—a humble image of the Ring Nebula (M31) using a Nikon D3300 and Celestron 130SLT—ignited a spark. “I was overjoyed just to capture something from space,” Lalo recalls.

Fast forward to 2025, and Lalo’s work has already gained recognition:

Lalo now operates three different setups, all equipped with ZWO products. His travel gear includes a RedCat 51 paired with the ASI2600MM camera, EAF, ASIAIR Mini, ASI120MM guide camera, and the AM5 mount. This portable setup allows him to stay mobile without compromising image quality.

“I really love the ASI2600MM camera,” Lalo shares. “Most of my best images were captured with it.”

Capturing the Sky from Home

While Lalo dreams of traveling to darker skies, most of his imaging sessions happen in his backyard. “From there, I can cover the entire sky,” he explains. Unfortunately, light pollution and wind are common challenges where he lives, but his passion keeps him going. “I research, take tutorials, and ask friends. That’s how I improve.”

More Than a Hobby

Astrophotography has not only become a passion for Lalo—it has transformed his life. “I have met many people, who have taught me a lot and who opened their doors to me without even know me, chatting on astrophotography while the equipment takes images of the sky. Brought to me the friendship and a hobby I really enjoy.”

ZWO: The Perfect Companion

Lalo first discovered ZWO through forums, YouTube, and Facebook while admiring others’ images. Today, he uses nearly the full suite: AM5, EAF, EFW, ASIAIR, ASI120MM, and ASI2600MM Pro. “What I love most is that I can connect everything to ASIAIR,” he says.

Looking Ahead

Lalo is already planning his next big project: capturing Abell 1656, the Coma Cluster—a stunning collection of galaxies. “What fascinates me most about galaxy clusters is their immense distance, and the satisfaction of being able to photograph something so far away.”

His advice to newcomers? “Invest in good gear. It’s a long learning process, but very satisfying if you truly enjoy it.”
